A Scream!
A Male-Female Continuum: Paths to Colleagueship
Published in Paperback by New Dynamics Pubns (April, 1998)

Why gender equity is needed.Parity is a priority. Or it must be soon. These authors show why a new appreciation for gender equity is needed. Why the polarity of either dominance or subordinance among males/females doesn't work. At the office. At home. On the town. Throughout one's life. This is a revised and expanded edition of a pioneering book first launched about ten years ago which sought to nurture dialogue between men and women toward a more harmonious context in which to live and work. These new pages reflect an even better understanding of the dynamics among colleagues, especially with updated observations on people of color and gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. Old habits die hard. "The interplay of gender, race, sexual orientation, and class is a reality of our society. Accepting that it is (is) necessary if we are to move on the struggle toward equity." Separate chapers examine men and women in transition, characteristics common to dominant and subordinate conditions. Relevant graphics drive home strategic points, and a terrific fold-out at the back tracks "traditional" women and men toward a common ground. From violence and helplessness to mutual powerment. Why not just pass new laws? Been there, done that. "The law and the legal process still lag far behind the values held by most women and many men. There are limits to what the laws can accomplish." That's why the new paradigm set forth in this book is so valuable. It clearly explains what the problems are, in text and graphics, then points to a trail of solutions. Get with it.

Man of Vision, Woman of Prayer
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (October, 1980)

an amazing account, real but almost surrealI read this book about a year and a half ago, having checked it out from my Bible College library. It was the title that drew me in, but the story is fascinating. Marilee Pierce Dunker does a just presentation of her father and mother's life in ministry with World Vision from its beginnings right through till her father's death.
This biography was gripping for me; towards the latter half, I didn't put it down till it was all over. A very sobering true story of the stress and pressures that famous Christian leaders face, and it's effects on their families, it's a good find among biographies because it balances out the fantastic with the tragic and real issues that often get glossed over in other accounts of people's lives. The author, daughter of Bob Pierce, does in no way disrespect her father or mother, while portraying their difficulties, and I came away from the book wowed by the family's perseverance, challenged to look with a less critical eye on those who are "big names" in the Christian community. Everybody's human, and we all make both sacrifices and mistakes, but God's grace and power to change us is the main message that I believe Pierce-Dunker delivers in this book. A worthy read (I want to read it again) if you can weather the storm that you witness by reading of the Pierce family in this powerfully moving account.

Memoirs of a Minotaur
Published in Paperback by Consortium Book Sales & Dist (15 October, 1999)
Average review score:

Poetic quest written in "the visionary company of love"This memoir by Robin Magowan offers not just a chronology of self-formation for the Merrill Lynch heir to the fundaments of capital-building and sexual excess. At its core is a poetic quest for language and vision, a text written and formed in "the visionary company of love" which would include Rimbaud, Whitman, F Scott Fitzgerald, and Henri Michaux. The "labyrinth" the self is entangled in is the excess of wealth and business nexus, the solipsism of sexual need and self-consciousness, the social determinations of class and culture that are never fully voided. But the mentor figures in the book are, oddly enough, James Merrill as delicate social force and trainer of agape, and Nancy Ling Perry as the militant apocalypse of drugs, revolutionary ideology, rage, bliss, and death. Somewhere between these two voices, lost in the heights of Tibet and clarity of meditative consciosness and restraint, Robin Magowan finds a new self and reveals much about the American capitalist self in the process. This is a wondrous book caputuring the 1960s at its visionary and crazy core, and moving out of the conformist 1950s into something better. It is a poetic quest worthy of a great soul, written with courage, lucidity, and need. A drunken boat casting its waves from Merrill Lynch to Dante and ordinary selfhood. A prayer of "crack up" like Fitzgerald's uttered in the micro-cracks, woundings, and megatrends of capital gone inward into self-abolishment and the quest for vision.

Mexican Churches

New Mexico Spanish Colonial House: A Stand-Up Paper Model With Cut-And-Fold Miniatures
Published in Paperback by Museum of New Mexico Pr (August, 1996)
Average review score:

fun and educational projectAdults and children (recommend age 10 and up) can enjoy this project together, as we did on a winter afternoon. The result is a 4-room Spanish style New Mexico adobe home with many pieces of authentic furniture and details. It also includes substantial historical information about the house and it's contents. Great for people who enjoy paper crafts. Would also make a wonderful project and learning experience for a group of students in the upper grades (4-8), with adult assistance.
